Convened and sponsored by the Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice (KICJ), this special workshop will focus on aliens which refers to people from other countries. Under the membership politics of the nation-state, they have only limited rights granted by the sovereign state. We will explore the multiple aspects of justice for aliens including democracy, the rule of law, transnationality and citizenship. Discussion will cover how aliens are often seen as objects within the politics of exclusion and are subject to discrimination, hostility and the impact of nationalist ideologies. We will also examine the tension between the universalism of human rights and the sovereignty of the nation-state, and how this unfolds across the world.

This workshop is open to all participants. We kindly invite participants to join us for a lively discussion. Please submit abstracts(under 500 words) with a short academic biography (no more than 200 words) in English by 26th April 2024.
