Workshop Overview
We are excited to announce a special workshop on “Law and Theology: Reason and Love,” to be held as part of an upcoming IVR2024 congress. This workshop aims to explore the intricate connections between legal philosophy and theological principles, focusing on how the concepts of reason and love (agape, selfless, unconditional love) intersect with and inform legal thought. We invite legal philosophers, theologians, jurists, and scholars from related disciplines to contribute to this dialogue, with a particular focus on democracy, the rule of law, and the theory of justice.

Subtopics for Consideration
Democracy and Theological Perspectives: How do theological concepts, especially the notion of love, influence democratic principles and practices? We seek papers exploring the interplay between theological ethics and democratic theory.
Rule of Law and Reason: This subtopic invites discussions on the integration of reason and theological insights in the formulation and interpretation of the rule of law. How do faith and reason coalesce or conflict in legal contexts?
Theories of Justice and Love: Contributions under this theme should explore the influence of love in shaping various theories of justice. How can the principle of selfless love reshape our understanding of justice in legal theory?
Interdisciplinary Approaches to Law and Theology: We welcome papers that address the intersection of law and theology through interdisciplinary approaches, particularly those that offer innovative perspectives on traditional legal concepts.
Law and Theology as Drama and Ritual: This subtopic is the exploration of the role of ritual in both legal and theological practices. This subtopic delves into how ritualistic elements in law and theology contribute to the understanding, practice, and perception of each field. It offers a comparative analysis, drawing parallels and highlighting differences between the ceremonial aspects of legal proceedings and religious rituals.
Comparative Analysis of Ecclesiastical Law and Secular Legal Systems: This subtopic is the comparative analysis of ecclesiastical law (church law) and secular legal systems. This subtopic involves exploring the distinctions, interactions, and overlaps between the legal frameworks and principles governing religious institutions (specifically Christian denominations) and those of secular states.
Contemporary Challenges: Papers may also address current issues in law and theology, examining how these ancient disciplines can offer insights into modern legal challenges.
