Major Career
Dr. Beom-Sik Jang is a finance scholar and higher education leader. He joined Soongsil University in 1995 and became the fifteenth president of Soongsil University in February 2021. He has been actively leading technology-based projects and initiatives to transform Soongsil University into one of the best student-centric and innovative universities, addressing both domestic and global challenges.
His major areas of research focus on investment banking, corporate finance, capital raising, venture capital, risk management, and securities regulation. His teaching interests include financial market and institutions, valuation, investments, and financial management.
Prior to becoming the president of Soongsil University, he has been actively involved in policy consulting for Korean government and has worked on national and international projects sponsored by the Asia Development Bank, the World Bank, and local governments in Korea, concerning the financial market reform, the liberalization of Vietnamese capital market, the new market for small and medium companies, construction project evaluation, capital raising opportunities for firms, performance evaluation of government owned companies, securities market architecture, and capital market development. Also, Dr. Jang led Working Committee of Special Mission, organized by Korean National Parliament to help government and financial market participants redesign the capital market.
Dr. Jang served as the Chair of Advisory Committee of Financial Industry Development for Seoul Metropolitan Government. He also served as Chair of Financial Reform Committee for Korean Government, and served as Chair of Advisory Committee for Korea’s Financial Development, which is a financial policy advisory arm of Financial Services Commission (FSC). In addition, Dr. Jang was a non-standing commissioner of Financial Services Commission from 2005-2008.
Prior to joining FSC, he had served as a founding committee member of KOSDAQ Committee from its foundation in 1998 until the world’s fastest new market merged into the Korea Exchange(KRX) in 2005. He also served as an advisory committee member of the KRX, KOSDAQ Listed Companies Association, Venture Business Association, and Venture Capital Association in Korea.
He held the position of Chair of Advisory Committee of Financial Supervisory Services in Korea during 2012-2016. He served on the Boards of Directors of the Korea Financial Investment Association and the KDB Investment Co(Private Equity Fund), respectively. Dr. Jang has been serving as CEO of Seoul Investment Banking Forum (SIBF) since 2017 whose members are CEOs of representative Korean financial firms including banks, securities companies, insurance companies, private equity funds and finance-affiliated associations.
Dr. Jang served on the Boards of Directors of Korean Finance Association and Korean Securities Association. He is Former President of Korea Securities Association during 2008-2009 and serves on the Board of Directors of the Korean Securities Law Association. He served as Dean of the Graduate School of Business and Dean of the Graduate School of Labor Relations at Soongsil University. He had also served as the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Soongsil University during 2014-2017.
Dr. Jang earned his Bachelor’s degree and M.B.A in Finance from Seoul National University. He holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin.
